Veteran Story: Alvin Younger

For more than a decade, Alvin B. Younger answered the call to serve his country. A Captain (O-3) in the United States Army, Mr. Younger served during the Gulf War era from December 1980 through September 1992, over eleven years of service.

Today, Mr. Younger's battles are of a different kind. Like many Veterans who gave so much in uniform, he now lives with the lasting toll of his service, including Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) that has led to migraines and sleep apnea, service-connected Chronic Kidney Disease, hypertension, and a host of other conditions including osteoarthritis, osteopenia, and gout. Navigating daily life with these challenges in no small feat, and doing so safely within his own home had become increasingly difficult. 

That's where Purple Heart Homes stepped in.

Restoring Safety, Restoring Dignity

Through the Veterans Aging in Place (VAIP) program, Purple Heart Homes' Central Virginia Chapter worked with Mr. Younger and his household to make meaningful, life-changing modifications to his home in Gladys, Virginia. The project, which spanned from November 1, 2025 through its completion on March 24, 2026, focused on critical accessibility and safety enhancements, including:

• Repairs to two exterior ramps, ensuring Mr. Younger can safely enter and exit his home
• Installation of grab bars in his bathroom, providing vital stability and reducing the risk of falls

For a Veteran managing the daily realities of arthritis, TBI-related symptoms, and other chronic conditions, these upgrades are far more than home repairs, they are the difference between independence and vulnerability. They are the difference between a home that feels limiting and one that feels safe.

More Than a Mission - A Movement

Purple Heart Homes was founded on the belief that the men and women who sacrificed for this country deserve to live with safety, comfort, and dignity. Mr. Younger's story is a reminder of why that mission matters.

He served during one of the most complex military periods in modern American history. He wore the rank of Captain. He gave over eleven years. And now, with the support of dedicated volunteers from the Central Virginia Chapter, his home reflects the respect and gratitude he has always been owed.

Two household members benefit from the work completed, a quiet by powerful reminder that when we serve our Veterans, we serve their families too.
