Veteran's Story: Charmer Hall Jr.

Last Updated 7/11/2025Posted in Central Virginia Chapter Projects

In Lexington, Virginia, U.S. Army Veteran Charmer Hall Jr. received an accessibility upgrade through Purple Heart Homes' Veterans Aging in Place Program and support from The Home Depot Foundation.

This project, led by Project Manager Tim Bates and completed by the Purple Heart Homes Central Virginia Chapter, focused on restoring independence and safety for a Veteran who sacrificed so much.

Charmer's Service

Charmer Hall Jr., born in 1947, served in the United States Army from August 1967 to March 1970, including time in combat with the 82nd Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. He earned the rank of E5 and was wounded twice in the line of duty.

A Need for Access and Dignity

Until recently, Charmer was forced to back down the stairs of his home just to get outside. For a man who once jumped out of planes in service to his country, this unsafe situation was unacceptable.

Charmer reached out to Purple Heart Homes in search of a solution, and thanks to our Veterans Aging in Place Program, he got one.

How Purple Heart Homes Helped

Despite being over an hour away from the Central Virginia Chapter's home base in Lynchburg, the team made multiple trips to Lexington to serve the deserving Veteran.

With care and precision, they:

  • Repaired and reinforced Charmer's existing deck for stability
  • Pre-fabricated ramp sections offsite to speed up installation
  • Installed a custom wheelchair ramp allowing safe, independent access in and out of his home.

A Thank You to Our Partners

This project was made possible by the generous support of The Home Depot Foundation, whose continued investment empowers local chapters to meet Veterans' needs across the country. We are proud to stand alongside them in making meaningful change, one home at a time.

Our Mission in Action

At Purple Heart Homes, we believe that no Veteran should be left behind, especially those living with injuries connected to their service.

For Charmer Hall Jr., a ramp was more than structure, it was the ability to exit his home without fear, to regain a piece of independence in his daily life.
