Veteran Story: Jennifer Hart
For Air Force Veteran Jennifer Hart, the simple comfort of a warm home had been out of reach for far too long. For three years, Jennifer and her family lived without heat in their Lynchburg, Virginia home, enduring cold winters while caring for one another and doing the best to get by. Thanks to the compassion of community partners and the support of PHH Central Virginia Chapter, that now has changed.
At home, Jennifer is the legal caregiver for both her mother and her adult son, who is autistic. The household of three relies on Jennifer not only for care and stability, but for strength during challenging circumstances. When her home lost heat, the responsibility became heavier.
Jennifer initially reached out to Purple Heart Homes seeking help with roof and boiler repairs. While another nonprofit organization was able to step in and provide a new roof, the lack of heat remained an urgent and unresolved issue.
Her home, built in 1904, presented significant challenges. After outreach to multiple contractors, it became clear that replacing the existing furnace was not economically feasible. The crawlspace was too small to accommodate a compatible system, and the existing ductwork beneath the home had severely deteriorated.
For three years, Jennifer and her family lived without a reliable heat source, navigating daily life in conditions no family should have to endure.
Through the Veterans Aging in Place Program, Purple Heart Homes worked to find a safe and sustainable solution. With generous support from The Home Depot Foundation and the expertise of community partners Barney Electric Company and Ideal Comfort, the project team identified mini-split systems as the best option.
The installation of three mini-split units provided efficient, reliable heating tailored to the home's unique structure, finally restoring warmth to every season of Jennifer's life.
For the first time in three years, Jennifer and her family can experience the comfort and safety of a heated home. This project did more than improve a house. It restored dignity, peace of mind, and stability for a Veteran who has given so much to others.
Three lives were directly impacted by this work, and a long-standing hardship was finally lifted.
This project was completed through Purple Heart Homes' Central Virginia Chapter, demonstrating what is possible when compassionate partners come together to serve those who served us.
At Purple Heart Homes, we believe every Veteran deserves a safe place to call home. Jennifer's story is a powerful reminder that honoring service means showing up in a tangible, meaningful ways.
